The invention describes a method of decomposing polymers, in particular old and used plastics, in which so-called NOR-HALS compounds, for example compounds containing the group (III) in which R* represents C1-C20-alkyl, C1C20-alkyl substituted by OH, C5-C12-cycloalkyl optionally substituted by C1-C4-alkyl, or C2-C20-alkyl interrupted by O or S, are added and heated to temperatures that are higher than usual temperatures for processing polymers (280 ~C and above).
