The vacuum switch has a cylindrical body 3 and at both ends are caps 4,5 that provide support for the contact 14,19 carrying tubes 8,16. Both end caps have inset seals 9,29. The lower contact carrier is coupled to an actuator and both carriers have coupled metal bellows 13,18. The end of the carrier has a piston 22 and this has a control orifice 21 connecting the two formed chambers 24,27. When the switch is actuated the piston arrangement provides a damping action to prevent contact bounce.
