PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium and a surface-modifier of superior lubrication characteristics by specifying a composition of a lubricant forming a surface-modifier layer on a protecting layer. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a substrate 1 as a non- magnetic supporting body, a magnetic body layer 4, a protecting layer 5 a surface-modifier layer 6, and an Ni-P layer 2 and a Cr layer 3 between the substrate 1 and magnetic body layer 4 which are provided to improve adhesion properties therebetween. The surface-modifier layer is obtained by applying and drying on the protecting layer 5 a solution in which a compound containing fluorine is dissolved in a fluoric solvent of a perfluoroalkane structure. The compound is expressed by a general formula 1 in which Rf is a perfluoropolyoxyalkylene chain of an average molecular weight M or 1000 or larger, R<1> is a straight chain/branch alkyl group, a cyclic alkyl group having an unsubstituted/straight chain or branch alkyl chain, and A is a pyrrolidine or piperidine having an unsubstituted or a straight chain or branch alkyl chain. |
