The level meter determines the degree of fullness or the fill height in a container for fluid. It has a probe responsive to the presence of fluid. The device also has a regulation device. This regulates the probe to a higher temp. with respect to the surroundings.A signal is output for the probe in response to an increased heat energy. The increased temp. region can be realised using a small energy source. An analysis circuit determines how much heat energy is required to keep the 'hot point' at a higher temp. than the surroundings. A signal, preferably a digital signal, is output by the analyser to determine the fullness or fill height.
