Application of a coating onto a selected surface of at least one plate (10) of the rotor of an electric motor, the coated surface being the external periphery of the slits (24) for the bars of the rotor, comprises the stages: (i) application (36) of a coating material to the selected surface of a plate(10); (ii) drying (38) the plate; and (iii) baking (40) of the coating material. Also claimed is the machine tool (50) for effecting the coating procedure and an apparatus (100) for eliminating excess coating material. Before application of the coating material, a cleaning step (34) of the plate is effected by induction heating at 190 deg C. for less than 1 minute. The coating material is applied (36) at a plate temperature of 20-40 deg C. The application may comprise placing of the rotor plate (10) in an injection tool (50) or rolling the plate in a coating bath. The drying (38) of the plate and baking (40) of the coating material is effected by heating the plate to 100-120 deg C for 10-15 mins., then heating to 300 deg C. The coating material is a solution of diammonium phosphate (DAP) and monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and colloidal silica stabilized with ammonia. The composition of the baked coating comprises 75% of phosphate and 25% of silica (more preferably 5.2 - 12.5% of DAP, 2.7 - 8.0% of MAP and 7.0 - 12.0% of colloidal silica). Before the drying stage, excess coating material is removed. |
