The object of the invention are cholesteric liquid crystalline polymers containing at least one coloured comonomer absorbing light in the visible wavelength range. The coloured comonomers may be bifunctional hydroxy, amino and/or carboxy derivatives of anthanthrone, anthraquinone, dioxazine, phthalocyanine, quinacridone, diketopyrrolopyrrol, perylene, perinone, azomethine or azo pigments or aminostilbene carboxylic acids. Coatings with such polymers exhibit colour effects depending on the angle of observation which cannot be obtained by absorption pigments alone or by cLCP effect coatings.
