Method and apparatus for laser surgery, in particular cosmetical laser surgery

The surgical alteration of skin tissue involves selecting a first coherent radiation source which emits a first coherent radiation having an excitation length in the skin tissue of between about 0.01 millimetres and about 0.001 millimetres. A second coherent radiation source is selected which emits a second coherent radiation having an excitation length in the skin tissue of between 0.1 and 0.01 millimetres. The skin tissue is ablated by directing a first beam of the first coherent radiation at the skin tissue. The skin tissue is coagulated by directing a second beam of the second coherent radiation at the skin tissue, coaxially and substantially simultaneously with the first beam.
