The hand-held diagnostic dental probe comprises a casing including a hand-holdable body portion and a neck extending distally from the body, with a head formed with a front cover and a back cover. A circuit board within the casing includes video processing circuitry, the circuit board further including a flexible board extending from the body through the neck of the casing and having a head positioned in the head section of the casing. A solid state images is affixed to the head member and in circuit communication with the video processing circuitry. A focusing lens cell is carried on the front cover for focusing onto the imager an image of a target object or area in its field of view. A lamp is carried on the head member. The front cover directs illumination from the lamp into the field of view. A conduit carries power to the video processing circuitry and to the lamp, for carrying from the video processing circuitry a video signal representing the target object or area in the field of view. The adjustable lens cell is manually actuable to adjust its focal length.
