A continuous-belt drilling mud separation unit (10) is removably mounted in a box-like housing (30) disposed in the flow path of drilling mud or drilling fluids and is operated by a motor (40) on the housing (30). The separation unit (10) includes a generally rectangular frame (11, 12), a tensioning system (21, 22, 23, 24), and a wide continuous belt (17A, 17B, 17C or 17F) in the form of a mesh screen (17A), chain (17B), self-cleaning chain link belt (17C), or combination chain link belt and wire mesh screen (17F) extending around rollers (29A, 29B, 42A, 42B) or sprockets (16). Liquids and particles smaller than the openings in the belt pass through the openings and liquids and particles larger than the openings are transported on the moving belt and are discharged off of one end of the belt.
