PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain glycolic acid useful for medicines, cosmetics etc., <=100ppm in content of ether linkage-bearing compound(s) such as methoxyacetic acid as impurities by catalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol. SOLUTION: The glycolic acid <=100ppm in content of ether linkage-bearing compound(s) such as methoxyacetic acid is obtained on an industrial scale at low cost without the need of any complicated purification process by catalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol with diethylene glycol content limited to <=0.3wt.%.
