PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the consumption of energy by intermittently irradiating a TiO2 -base photocatalyst with light when the photocatalyst is irradiated with light of a specified wavelength from an artificial light source and pollutants in air are removed with the photocatalyst. SOLUTION: Polluted air is brought into contact with a TiO2 -base photocatalyst, that is, TiO2 or a mixture of TiO2 with active carbon or active carbon and iron oxide such as iron (III) oxide while intermittently irradiating the photocatalyst with light of <=40nm wavelength from an artificial light source to remove the pollutants in the polluted air by oxidation with the photocatalyst and adsorption on the photocatalyst. The oxidative removal of NOx and SOx is performed by the action of the photocatalyst under irradiation with light and the photocatalyst removes such pollutants by its adsorption even under no irradiation with light, that is, under a dark condition. The consumption of energy can be reduced while suppressing the lowering of the rate of removal of pollutants. |
