PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure a sufficient energy absorption amount without substantially generating the rigidity drop of a structure member and the strength drop of car room equipment. SOLUTION: The energy absorption structure for a body upper part of an automobile is provided with a roof side rail 20 for forming a closed sectional space 28 by an outer panel 24 and an inner panel 26 and an assist grip 22 arranged inside the car room of this roof side rail and an energy absorption bracket 32 made of a metal, arranged in the closed sectional space 28, deformable toward the outside of the car room. The assist grip 22 is installed on the intermediate part 36 of the energy absorption bracket 32 and supported with a support means 42 penetrating a hole 40 bored on the inner panel.
