PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having high herbicidal effect on gramineous weeds and exhibiting excellent safety to rice plant. SOLUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I (X is H or a halogen) e.g. 3,5-dichloro-α,α-dimethylbenzylamine. The compound can be produced by reacting a substituted benzoic acid halide of formula II (X' is a halogen) with a Grignard reagent, substituting the OH of the obtainedα,α-dimethylbenzyl alcohol with a halogen, reacting the resultantα,α-dimethylbenzyl halide with a cyanic acid salt to obtainα,α-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate and finally hydrolyzing the product.
