The heat exchanger comprises a stack of identical pockets (1) within which the first fluid circulates. Each pocket is formed of two sheets (2,3) which are shaped to form shallow trays. The concavities of the two trays are turned to face each other and the trays are sealed together along their edges. The trays are not of completely uniform depth, each having a deeper region (5) which faces a corresponding deeper region in the other tray. The inlet and outlet chambers for the first fluid are formed in these regions of the pockets. Between the pockets, where the trays are not of full depth, there are spaces (10) for the circulation of the second fluid. These spaces include stacked heat transfer fins, and the whole assembly is designed to facilitate the flow of the second fluid through these heat transfer fins.
