The projectile, delivered e.g. by an artillery shell, mortar or aircraft, and then by parachute (8), has at least one explosive charge (13a,13b) which is set off by a detonator (17) to release fragments or a main missile. The projectile carries a detector (12) which can intercept a laser beam reflected from a target on the ground to set off the detonator and fire the fragments/missiles at the target. The projectile is designed to rotate and scan the target area, and incorporates a decoder (18) or the laser beam, which can be directed at the selected target by an operative on the ground. It can also have an emitter which controls a laser designator placed on a ground target.
