<p>A decanter centrifuge comprises: (a) a bowl (62) rotatable about a longitudinal axis (71), the bowl having cake discharge openings (74) at one end in a plane (P3) transverse relative to the longitudinal axis and with a liquid phase discharge opening (76) at an opposite end, the bowl having a cylindrical portion and beach portions (88)(90) between the cylindrical portion and the cake discharge opening and including a bowl head (72), in which the cake discharge openings are located, removably affixed to a body portion; (b) a conveyor (64) with a hub (68) having a portion disposed inside the bowl for rotation about the longitudinal axis at an angular speed different from an angular rotational speed of the bowl and including a helical screw (78) inside the bowl for scrolling a deposited solids cake layer (80) along an inner surface (82) of the bowl towards the cake discharge openings; (c) a feed pipe (66) for delivering a feed slurry into a feed compartment (66a) and through openings (66b) in the conveyor hub into a liquid pool (70) inside the bowl; and (d) an axially movable flow control sleeve (84) provided on the bowl at the cake discharge openings for varying the cross sectional area of the openings to selectively restrict the flow of cake along the bowl towards the openings. Also claimed are flow control structures in which the sleeve is moved circumferentially, a centrifuge with cake discharge openings (56a) in a bowl head end wall (58) with the flow control structure (60) pivotally attached and a method of operation.</p> |
