PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a crystalline polyester-amide which can give moldings improved in MD and TD strengths and dimensional accuracy by acetylating a specified phenolic compound or amino compound and polycondensing the product of acetylation with a carboxylic acid compound. SOLUTION: A phenolic compound or an amino compound which can give any one of the structural units represented by formulas I to VI is acetylated at 100-170 deg.C for 5min to 3hr in the presence of acetic anhydride in an amount 1-1.5 times as high as the total of the hydroxyl groups and the amino groups, and the obtained product of acetylation is polycondensed with a carboxylic acid compound which can give any one of formulas I to VI at 200-350 deg.C in a vacuum for 10hr or shorter to obtain a liquid crystal polyester satisfying the formulas:η50 <=10<4> and log(η100 /η1 ,000 )<=0.42 [whereinη50 ,η100 andη1 ,000 are the melt viscosities (P) at 300 deg.C and shear rates of 50sec<-1> , 100sec<-1> and 1,000sec<-1> , respectively] and containing structural units represented by formulas I to VI in a ratio satisfying formulas VII to XI (wherein Ma to Mf are the numbers of moles of structural units I to VI, respectively). |
