PURPOSE:To obtain methyl jasmonate containing active amount of epi-isomer having characteristic fragrance of natural jasmine essential oil by isomerizing methyl jasmonate in the presence of a basic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Methyl jasmonate containing active amount (>=5%) of methyl epi-jasmonate of formula II can be produced by isomerizing the compound of formula I in the presence of a basic catalyst (e.g. alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate or organic amine) under normal pressure at 20-200 deg.C or under a pressure of 5-50kg/cm<2> at 30-150 deg.C. The stably attainable range of the content of the epi-isomer of formula II produced by the above isomerization reaction is 10-14% based on the compound of formula I.
