In a modification of the process of the parent Specification allyl butyrate is copolymerized with one or more alkenes, which preferably contain from 6 to 10 carbon atoms in the molecule such as 1-octene, in such a way that initially and in any subsequent small interval of time the copolymer formed contains an average of more than 7 but not more than 14 carbon atoms (including the carbon atom of each esterified carboxylic group) per carboxylic group, and has an average molecular weight of at most 1,000. Copolymerization may be carried out in the presence of chain stoppers such as aldehydes and ketones of not more than 6 carbon atoms per molecule, for example acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, and hydrocarbons with a labile hydrogen atom linked to an aliphatic carbon atom which is linked to an aromatic nucleus, such p as cumene and triphenyl methane. The copolymer products are liquid and may be used as plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride. Specification 703,287 is referred to. |
