The external connector has an envelope (3) to be mounted on the opposed ends of the pipes to be connected and an elastomeric seal (4) to be interposed between the exterior envelope and the two pipe sections. The external envelope has an open lateral wall and locking clamps (7,8) for locking the envelope to bring together the ends of the lateral wall of the envelope and preload the seal. Stops (6,30) block the ends of the lateral wall in a closed locking position. The locking clamp can include a strap (7) enclosing the envelope and a tensioner for the strap to cause bringing together of the lateral ends of the envelope.
