The method of passenger detection defines a volume (11) filled with ultrasonic waves. The waves are generated by emitters (12) placed above the space, and echoes are received by detectors (13-16) placed adjacent to the emitter and distributed round it. A pair of transitions in the reflected signals are detected to allow deduction of passage of a moving object in the controlled volume, together with the sense of the movement. The echo signals are accumulated over an interval to determine validity of the detection. The signals are filtered and stored then supplied to a matching unit which determines sense. The matching unit incorporates a low pass filter for temporal filtering.
