For temperature homogenisation of polymer melts in screw extruders or injection moulding machines, in addition to the hollow space extending in the axial direction, the screw (2) has circumferentially distributed, radial heat-conducting cartridges (14) which project through the screw core (8) into the hollow space and around which the heat-transfer medium flows. The heat-conducting cartridges (14) may be in the form of heat-pipes (heat-pipe pins) which are individually hermetically sealed and only partly filled with a heat-transfer liquid, or may be open at their base ends (140). The screw core (8) itself may also be designed as a heat pipe or, on the other hand, may be connected to an external temperature-control system for the circulating temperature-control liquid (16). The use of the measures according to the invention is advisable in particular in the processing of shear-sensitive and heat-sensitive polymers and other polymers which are difficult to handle and for the dissipation of locally occurring frictional heat. <IMAGE>
