In a process for forming a double seam between the flange (2) of a can body (3) and a peripheral curl (5) of a can end, the assembly of can body and end are supported between a chuck (6) and a lifter (7). Relative rolling motion between the can end and first and second rolls (12, 15) progressively forms first and second operation seams. During first and second operations the lifter is raised to encourage engagement of the flange and curl. A preferred form of first operation seaming profile permits formation of small seams made of thin starting materials e.g. 0.14 mm. |
