The use of 1-(5-hydroxy-5-methyl)hexyl-3-methyl-7-propyl-xanthine (I) is claimed for (i) increasing levels of endogenous interleukin-10 (IL-10) and/or of soluble endogenous tumour necrosis factor (TNF) receptors (sTNF-R); (ii) preparation of medicaments for combatting diseases treatable by the activities specified in (i), or (iii) reducing the endogenous formation of pro-inflammatory blood factors or increasing endogenous formation of antiinflammatory blood factors.
