The method is characterised by the following steps: (a) shredded material is supplied from hoppers into a storage trough; (b) the material is periodically loaded into a hermetically closable compartment; (c) it is subjected to a gas containing oxygen, at a pressure which is higher than that in the furnace head; (d) after a specified pressure has been attained, the compartment outlet is opened to deliver the material into the furnace space and to immerse it into the metal melt in the furnace. Also claimed is an apparatus for implementation of the method.
