In a process for the removal of sulphur from blast furnace slag, the molten slag is fed into a tower 10 through a crucible 13 the bottom of which has a series of apertures formed by replaceable nozzles 21 so that the slag is broken up into a number of fine streams. The crucible is supported in an opening at the top of the tower either by a peripheral flange 18 or by a spider. The oxygen flow from inlet 17 may be arranged to be counter current or co-current to the slag flow using the peripheral flange arrangement, but with the spider support arrangement the oxygen must be introduced at the bottom of the tower so that only counter current flow is possible.</p> |
