The protector comprises an envelope (1) made from a supple material which is either moulded in one piece or made from two layers which are then stuck together by welding or adhesive, for example. It has a crescent-shaped cross-section, being thicker in the centre that at its edges, and it is filled with a fluid such as a neutral gas or a gel. The inner surface of the protector has a series of parallel ribs (8) and is shaped to follow the surface of the joint it covers, while its outer surface is devoid of any projections. The groove (7) between the ribs are open at the edges of the envelope to accentuate its deformability.
