The switching device comprises a control device (3) connected to a number of separate control elements (1). The control elements are situated in a chosen position, for example on the vehicle dashboard, to allow the user to adjust various aspects of the system. Indicator lights (8) are provided to illuminate each of the control elements. The control elements include detectors (9,12,18) arranged to detect the presence of a part of the user's body adjacent to the detector surface. This is used in conjunction with a timing device to change the state of set of indicator lights. The detector may includes a device transmitting EM waves (9), and a device (12) receiving these waves to produce a signal proportional to the received intensity. The received intensity is compared with a threshold value to determine when it is necessary to switch on the indicator lights. |
