the tunable laser diode with an integrated Mach-Zehnder-Interferometer, has two wave guides (2, 4) as strip formed layers in the same plane with one of them (4) spanning the full distance between the resonator mirror surfaces (M1, M2). The separation between the two is such that a mode coupling occurs between the waveguides. Within the region there is an active layer and a tuning layer that each receive separate current injection.
