PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the oscillation quantity of a picture due to the oscillation of a vehicle by detecting a deviation between the position of a reference picture and that of an approximate picture on a picture taken by a camera. SOLUTION: A searching ragne 106 is set up on a current piciture based upon the position of a reference picture 105 set in the preceding time. An approximate picture 107 most similar to the reference picture 105 is searched in the range 106 by a correlation method. Then, the coordinates of the picture 105 are compared with that of the picture 107 to detect pitching quantity as a deviation. The detected pitching quantity is reflected to the updating of a white line detection area. The position of a scanning line set by a white line detection area setting means is corrected so as to correspond to 10m forward poistion of a driver's own vehicle by adding the pitching quantity detected by a pitching quantity detection means to the position of the scanning line 101. Then a reference picture 105 is newly set on the current picture by using a coordinate position P as start point.
