HYDROPHOBIC METAL OXIDE POWDER AND ITS USE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hydrophobic metal oxide powder having frictional electrification property controllable over a wide range with a relatively small amount of a coating material and imparted with high hydrophobicity and fluidity by treating the surface of metal oxide powder with a mixture of a silicon oil containing epoxy group and an amine compound containing active hydrogen. SOLUTION: The objective hydrophobic metal oxide powder has a surface coating layer formed by simultaneously treating the surface with a silicone oil having epoxy group and non-polymerizable amine compound having primary and/or secondary amino groups of an amount less than the total epoxy groups. Preferably, the silicon oil has glycidyl group and the amine compound is a diamine expressed by the general formula, R<1> R<2> -NXNHR<3> (R<1> , R<2> and R<3> are each same or different H or a 1-10C alkyl; X is a 1-10C alkylene). A hydrophobic metal oxide powder having a frictional charge of +10 to +250μC/g can be produced by using the compounds.
