The invention concerns a system for filling a restraint device, in particular an airbag (4) for protecting motor vehicle passengers, the system displaying the following features: a gas mixture comprising a cold gas and a hot gas is used to fill the airbag (4); the cold gas is stored in a pressurized container (19); the pressurized container has an outlet opening (26) closed by a diaphragm (21); the hot gas is generated pyrotechnically in a module (27); the module (27) comprises a combustion chamber (12) with outlet openings (16) directed towards the diaphragm (21); when the system is triggered, the pyrotechnically generated hot gas first melts the diaphragm (21) and then heats the emerging cold gas; and the pressurized container (19) is disposed in a toroidal manner about the module (27).
