<p>New linear fibre- and film-forming crystalline polyesters are derived from asymmetic dicarboxylic acids and contain repeating units of the formula: <FORM:0968403/C3/1> where R is -CH3, -Br or -Cl or -F and when R is -CH3, y is 4 or more, when R is -Br, y is 6 or more, when R is -Cl, y is 4 or more and when R is -F, y is 2 or more; or of the formula: <FORM:0968403/C3/2> where R is methyl, halogen or alkoxy and R1 is aralkylene or cycloalkylene; or of the formula: <FORM:0968403/C3/3> where R is methyl, halogen or alkoxy and R1 is alkylene, aralkylene or cycloalkylene. The polyesters may be made by the usual prior art methods. In examples, they are made by reacting (1), (9) and (11) Dimethyl methylterephthalate and hexahydro-p-xylylene glycol p-di-(2-hydroxyethyl) benzene or hexamethylene glycol; (3) Dimethyl chloroterephthalate and hexahydro-p-xylylene glycol; (4) Dimethyl bromoterephthalate and hexahydro-p-xylylene glycol; (5), (6), (7), (8), (10), (12) and (13) Dimethyl fluoroterephthalate and ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, 1:4-butanediol, 1:5-pentanediol, 1:6-hexanediol or hexahydro-p-xylylene glycol; (14) Dimethyl methoxyterephthalate and hexahydro-p-xylylene glycol; (15) Dimethyl 3-methylbiphenyl-4:41-dicarboxylate and ethylene glycol; (16) Dimethyl 3-chlorobiphenyl-4:41-dicarboxylate and ethylene glycol.</p> |
