Non-volatile data storage device for use in portable computers

The storage device includes a data storage medium (15) mounted for rotation about an axis. A read/write head (18) is used for recording data on or reproducing data from the data storage medium. A printed circuit board (15) is also included, while a motor is used for rotating the data storage medium about its axis. The motor coil (14a) is formed on the printed circuit board. An actuator (17) is provided to which the read/write head is attached, and mounted to pivot about an axis so as to move the read/write head across the data storage medium. At least one motor annular permanent magnet (15a) is attached to the bottom of the data storage medium. At least one motor permanent magnet (17a) is attached to the actuator. The latter and data storage medium are both mounted on a shaft. All shafts (12,13) are mounted on PCB.
