SOLUTION: In a printing monitoring device for displaying on a monitor television screen 8 a still image of printed matter 20 photographed by a video camera 1 by emitting light to the printed matter 20 with the help of a stroboscope, the reference value of image data obtained by photographing a reference color using a video camera 1 and the control limit value of a color density are previously stored in a control circuit 7. At the same time, the measuring area of part of printed matter 20 and a color sample 6 are photographed simultaneously, then an error is calculated based on a difference between image data on the color sample 6 obtained by photographing the color sample 6 and the reference value, and the acceptability of the chromatic density of the printed matter 20 is determined by collating a correction value obtained by subtracting the error from the image data on the printed matter 20 with the control limit value.
