The monitoring system includes sensors (D1,D2,D3) for providing electrical signals and forming images of bodies immersed in the pool water. The images so produced are digitised (10a) and the digital data then compressed (10). The image data is then stored at a series of timed intervals. Successive digital images of a single body taken at a series of times are compared. The nature of the body is determined w.r.t. stored data, and the position and path of the body over time are monitored. If the position or path of the body should give cause for concern, an alarm is sounded.
