PRODUCTION OF PARA-NITROBENZYL ACETOACETATE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-purity compound useful as an intermediate for a carbapenem-based antibiotic by a simple operation. SOLUTION: p-Nitrobenzyl alcohol is reacted with an acetoacetate (e.g. methyl acetoacetate) in a solvent (e.g. toluene) or in the absence of a solvent at 50-200 deg.C under normal temperature or under reduced pressure for 1-30 hours to give p-nitrobenzyl acetoacetate. The molar ratio of methyl acetoacetate to p-nitrobenzyl alcohol is 1.2 to 50, preferably 2-10. The reaction is carried out while distilling away formed methanol together with toluene.
