<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a bar code consisting of a specific number of code elements. SOLUTION: The bar code reader 10 which detects the code elements generate a binary signal with successive high and low phases, and the lengths of the high and low phases correspond to the widths of the code elements which are successively scanned. Then only the said high and low phases whose lengths are within a defined range are processed as permissible code elements. The permissible code elements belonging directly to the successive high and low phases are grouped in plural segments and only segments having a specific number of code elements are allowed and further processed. When the number of code element of a permissible segment exceeds a specific number, the code elements actually belonging to a bar code 18 to be determined are specified by a means for a start sign, a stop sign, and/or a center sign included in the segments, and the found bar code 18 is decoded.</p> |
