[Also in Division B3] A graduated scale on,for example, a machine tool comprises a supporting body 11 with a high resistance to bending and a flexible foil 12 carrying the graduations 14,the foil being held to the body 11 along its length in a manner that permits differential longitudinal movement so that bending of the body 11 does not affect the graduations 14. As shown in Fig. 3 an intermediate resilient layer 15, e.g. of rubber, is secured to both the body and the foil. Alternatively the rubber may be at intervals only along the foil. In Fig. 7, the body 31 is formed as a permanent magnet and the foil 32 is magnetizable or coated with a magnetizable material. In Fig. 8 the foil 42 is held against longitudinal ridges 46 by the surface tension of a liquid 45 and may be also firmly secured to the body at one end. The foil may be transparent for viewing by transmitted light through an opening in the supporting body. |
