The drain has an electric motor (5), a push button (10) which starts the motor, a relay between the push button and the motor which has an electronic circuit which controls the power and a low voltage electrical supply from a battery or from the mains. A detector, consisting of electrodes (16, 17) which are short circuited by water, detects overflows. The detector is connected to the relay so that it automatically activates the emptying drain. The control for a toilet cistern has two buttons connected to the electric motor. Each button triggers a time delay at the relay which controls the automatic closure of the valve. This may close after the cistern is completely emptied or after it is partially emptied.
