The burner (10) has a body (12) made from three concentric metal tubes (13,14,15) forming first and second annular chambers (16,17). A first injection nozzle (18) is located at the inner end of the tubes. The nozzle is truncated conical in shape and forms annular orifices (43a,43b). The orifices can be adjusted by moving one or more of the tubes in an axial direction. The burner has a retainer (21) to hold the nozzle concentrically in a circular cavity (22) in a refractory wall (27) of a furnace and to support the tubes. A spark generator (26) is used to ignite the gas/oxygen mixture. It is also fed with compressed air, and the waste material, in the form of a liquid or ground solid material, is delivered to the centre of the flame.
