The invention proposes a more economical propulsion system for a ship carrying liquified gas, running at intermediate speed rather than full-speed, so not requiring a natural gas power plant condenser. Heretofore the natural gas evaporation has been used to power gas-turbine propulsion so that when the vessel was at rest, the gas evaporation required discharging to atmosphere to avoid excessive pressure build-up, or condensed by short-circuiting the turbine. The liquified gas (2) is used to power diesel-electric alternators (15,16) the output from which is frequency-converted (17) and supplies propulsion motors (18). The motors drive the power propeller (10) via clutches (20) and gearbox (19). |
