Metering units for viscous substances, e.g. adhesive or solder paste comprise a cartridge (K) filled with said viscous substance and to which compressed air can be applied via a compressed air supply (DA) and at least one metering nozzle (DD) or needle. A device for outgassing such metering units is proposed, with a container (B) which can be made gastight to accept the metering unit, a first vacuum line (VL1) connected to the inside of the container (B) and a second vacuum line (VL2) which can be connected to the compressed air supply (DA) of the cartridge (K), in which both vacuum lines (VL1, VL2) are connected to a vacuum generator (VE) in an inital phase and only the first vacuum line (VL1) remains connected to the vacuum generator (VE) in a second stage. Such a device makes it possible effectively to outgas the metering unit and hence to meter the viscous substances evenly and perfectly.
