PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head which decreases leakage magnetic fields and in which side erasure hardly occurs and a process for producing the same. SOLUTION: A pair of magnetic cores 32a, 32b formed with magnetic films 31a, 31b by a sputtering method are joined on the butt surfaces of magnetic substrates 30a, 30b in such a manner that these magnetic films 31a, 31b face each other via a gap g2. The magnetic films 31a, 31b are formed by setting the distance between the magnetic substrates 30a, 30b and a target at the average free travel of sputtered particles or below at the time of forming these films in the process for producing the magnetic head. As a result, the radius of curvature at the edges 36 of the magnetic films 31a, 31b at both ends of a magnetic gap g2 attains <=0.5μm and the generation of the leakage magnetic fields is lessened.
