A yarn feeder, eg. for a knitting machine, of the type in which yarn is wound on a motor-driven drum reverse motion of the drum is prevented by means comprising two ring-shaped members (S, W) mounted one within the other coaxially with the motor axis (X) but mutually engaging at surfaces (15,20) which are eccentric with respect to the axis (X). The members (S, W) are capable of limited relative rotation on the surfaces (15,20). During normal motor-driven rotation the member (W) which is connected to the motor shaft (H) entrains the member (S) by a projection (26) and the member (S) maintains a clearance from a braking ring (24). If reverse rotation begins when the motor is inoperative, however, the member (S) is held back by engagement with an element (7) and relative rotation between the members (S, W) on their eccentric surfaces (15,20) forces the member (S) into braking engagement with the ring (14). The arrangement may be modified so that the member (S) engages a braking ring located internally of the member.
