The invention comprises compounds of the formula where Y is -SO3 alkali metal, R is H or C1- 4 alkyl or alkoxy, X is -NH2 or the radical of a primary or secondary aliphatic amine containing 1-4 carbon atoms and preferably containing 1-4 carbon atoms and preferably containing OH, COOH or SO3H groups, and Z is -SO2CH=CH2 or -SO2CH2CH2OSO3 alkali metal. These compounds are brightening agents (see Division D1) and can be prepared from cyanuric chloride and appropriate amino compounds. Compounds with Z as -SO2CH=CH2 may be treated with concentrated H2SO4, cooled and treated with NaHCO3 to convert Z to -SO2CH2CH2OSO3Na. Conversely, compounds with Z as -SO2CH2CH2OSO3Na when treated with NaOH solution give Z as -SO2CH=CH2. The material to be brightened may be of wool, silk, synthetic protein fibres, polyamide fibres, cotton, hemp, linen, or regenerated or acetylated cellulose, as loose fibrous material, filaments, flocks, yarns, woven fabrics, knitted fabrics or felts; or as foils or other materials, e.g. paperboard or paper.
