PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease overall build-up (AM modulative noises) by specifying the long wavelength component intensity average of 20 to 80μm at the surface roughness curve of a nonmagnetic base, defined as P, and the max. value thereof, defined as Pm , to be P×Pm <=1. SOLUTION: Since spacing arises between the recessed parts and a head at the time of recording and reproducing in the case of a magnetic tape (a) or magnetic tape (b) having ruggedness on the surface 1 and the output decreases, reproducing waveforms become larger or smaller in correspondence to the ruggedness of A, B, C, D, E, F of the magnetic tape surface 1. Further, the reproducing waveforms become larger or smaller in correspondence to the ruggedness of A, B, C, D, E, F of the magnetic tape surface 1. Further, since the repeating amplitude (magnitude) of the reproducing waveforms is proportional to the varying sizes of the ruggedness of the magnetic tape surface 1, differences as shown on the right side in the Fig. arise in the reproducing waveforms of the magnetic tape (a) and the magnetic tape (b). The reproducing waveforms are flattened in the case of the absence of the ruggedness.
