PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a disklike compound capable of introducing a precursor in a side chain part thereinto even when having a substituent group easily affected by an acid in esterifying a precursor in the central part of a specific structure with the precursor in the side chain part and useful as an optically anisotropic material, etc., such as a phase-contrast film. SOLUTION: The esterification of (A) a precursor in the central part having a phenolic hydroxyl group (preferably 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene) with (B) a precursor in the side chain part having carboxylic acid is carried out to produce a disklike compound. In the process, the esterification is conducted by reacting a mixed acid anhydride derivative prepared by activating the carboxylic acid part of the component (B) with the component (A). Furthermore, the component (B) preferably has a functional group capable of initiating addition reaction or hydrolysis (e.g. anα,β-unsaturated carbonyl, an enol ether or epoxy). The mixed acid anhydride is preferably prepared by dropping a carboxylic acid, an amine and a solvent into an acid chloride and a solvent.
