An article clamping apparatus suitable for use with a tool holder 5 comprises a collet 7 formed by a plurality of divided pieces, a draw bar 3, a support sleeve 8 surrounding the draw bar via the collet and cooperating means 7a-7c both for closing the collet when the draw bar is drawn away from the collet end of a spindle 1 and for subsequently increasing the clamping force of the collet around a tool. The cooperating means expands the forward end of the collet when the draw bar is advanced towards the collet end of the spindle and withdraws the collet when the draw bar is withdrawn, the amount by which the collet is withdrawn being less than the distance moved by the draw bar, thus producing the increased clamping force. |
