The invention concerns a process for preparing calcium cyanamide by reacting urea with an oxygenous calcium compound in at least two steps: a) in a first step the reaction components are reacted by condensation and/or circulation or by applying them to a hot surface at temperatures of between 120 and 500 degree C until a solid forms; and b) the resultant solid reaction mixture is then calcined at temperatures of between 600 and 900 degree C. In this way high yields and charges of calcium cyanamide can be obtained without necessitating complicated reprocessing of the reaction product after the first or second step.
